Residential Washers

Washing machines are a big deal in most households, making it easy to wash everyone's clothes without the hassle of going to the laundromat or dry cleaner. They're used several times a week, so it's important to have one that can handle all that use and won't break down.

Top Load Agitator are traditional and still common even though they’ve been around for sixty years. When you open the lid, you'll see the long agitator in the middle, which is the main washing power. During a cycle, it swishes against the clothes to get them clean.

Front Load are a great alternative. Instead of using an agitator to wash the clothes, front load washers depend on one article rubbing against another, so the cycle is gentler on clothes. They don’t use much water, only filling to just below the door. Large items will wash better in a front load, and they spin very fast, giving you a head start on the drying process.

Top Load Impeller are the newest category of appliances. Rather than an agitator, they use an impeller at the bottom to swoosh the clothes back and forth, and the tub itself moves as part of the wash stroke. They are comparable to a front load, but some models - GE and Maytag included - allow you to fill them to the top with water if needed. Now, when you have large or very dirty items, you can get them cleaner than you can with a front load. Otherwise, you can use the high-efficiency cycle for most loads, which uses less water.

Common Residential Washer Problems

Washer on the fritz? There’s a number of things that could be going wrong, and often it will take an experienced repair technician to properly identify what’s causing the issue. However, some of the most common washing machine problems to be on the lookout for include:

Water isn’t draining from the drum

A major problem for more than one reason, a washing machine draining too slowly or not at all is a good reason to call a professional. If your machine is front-loading, you may not even be able to open it without dumping water all over your floor, resigning the garments inside to a watery grave. Any drainage issue in your washing machine will usually point to a problem with your drain pump, which is responsible for emptying the drum during the cycle. A drain pump will stop working over time due to wear and tear, or if hard objects are left to rattle around inside the drum during a cycle.

Washer won’t start, or suddenly stops mid-cycle

A particularly frustrating washing machine problem is when the cycle won’t begin, or else ends prematurely. There are a few reasons that your machine might be having this issue, but often the cause is a faulty lid or door switch. This switch is a safety mechanism designed to stop the machine from running when the lid isn’t secured. This is a good fail-safe to have, of course, but it’s not quite as handy when it stops your wash cycle just fifteen minutes in. Over time, a lid switch will become worn out and damaged, and it will often have to be replaced by a technician.

Water isn’t entering the drum to begin with

Again, this is typically a sign of a problem with your drain pump. It may simply be breaking down due to old age, or damaged by something left inside the machine. So, make sure to check your child’s pockets for any rock collections! Any hard object left inside the drum has the chance to damage the internal parts of your machine, including the connection between the drain hose and drain pump.

One other possible reason for water not entering the washer is a problem with the water inlet valve. This bit of hardware regulates the water, both hot and cold, that enters the basin of your unit. If this valuable part of your washing machine has been damaged, then it’s irreparable; cleaning it will not help either. A replacement will need to be installed in order to fix this problem. The actual replacement is quite straightforward, but you’ll need to be sure you’re getting the right component for your make and model of washing machine. Likewise, the procedure for replacing a water inlet valve changes depending on the appliance, so we recommend consulting a technician for this repair to ensure a smooth fix.

Washer is making weird noises, or vibrating unusually during its cycle

If your machine is making strange sounds during a cycle or seems to be vibrating the whole house when it’s on, your tub bearings may need to be replaced. These bearings will usually become worn out due to a failing seal on your machine, allowing them contact with water. Typically, when experiencing strange washing machine noises and vibrations, a technician will need to replace your tub bearings as well as your washer seals.

The interior basket is spinning slowly or not at all

In our experience, this problem is usually accompanied by a strange rattling from the base of the spinning basket. This is normally caused by a faulty motor coupler, which will usually need to be replaced. The most common reason for a failing coupler is frequent overloading of your washing machine, which puts added stress on the motor.
